The story of Voice of Christianity (VOC) began over six decades ago with a courageous step of faith. In 1959, the Metzger family felt a divine calling to leave their home in Long Island, New York, and move to the Texas/Mexico border. They arrived with a simple but powerful mission: to serve the "least of these" and bring the message of Jesus Christ to families in need through tangible, compassionate action.
By 1965, the Metzgers’ vision took a permanent shape with the establishment of the Voice of Christianity Mission in Brownsville, Texas. For over 50 years, this site served as a beacon of hope for thousands of families. The Metzgers didn't just preach; they lived among the people, distributing food, clothing, and everyday staples, proving that the Gospel is best heard when it is accompanied by a helping hand.
As the years passed, the mantle of leadership remained within the family. Captain Steve Cody II, the grandson of the original founders, grew up witnessing the impact of the Brownsville mission firsthand. Alongside his wife, Guadalupe "Lupita" Cody, Steve remained committed to the vow his grandparents made in 1959: to never turn away a soul in need.
In 2020, Voice of Christianity entered a season of revitalization. To better serve the growing needs of the Mid-Valley area, the organization relocated its base of operations to Mercedes, Texas. This move allowed for the establishment of the VOC Ranch, a center for community outreach, livestock mentorship, and large-scale distribution.
While the location changed, the heart of the ministry remained identical to the Metzgers' original vision. Under the leadership of Captain Steve and a dedicated board of family and friends, VOC updated its 501(c)(3) status to ensure the mission would be protected and positioned for the next century of service.
Today, Voice of Christianity is a true multi-generational effort. With the Metzgers' great-grandson Ryan N. Cody serving as Vice President, and the involvement of the entire Cody family—including Steve-O, Audrey, and Max—the organization is stronger than ever.
From the Annual Easter Party at the Park to our furniture ministry and upcoming scholarship programs, we continue to be a "boots-on-the-ground" ministry. We believe that by meeting the physical needs of our neighbors in the Rio Grande Valley, we open the door to sharing the life-changing love of Christ.
